Postural
Hypertension
Postural hypertension can be the reason of an unexpected increase in
your blood pressure levels. Under normal circumstances the blood
pressure should average around 120/80 mmHg. It can be more or less
depending on the age and overall health of a person.
During the day the pressure changes depending on several factors like
the liquids and food consumed, stress levels and overall physical
activity. Medications are another important element that should be
watched carefully as it can alter your blood pressure dramatically. One
thing that you may not be aware of is that sometimes a simple change in
your position can raise your blood pressure in a significant way.
Orthostatic or postural hypertension occurs when your blood pressure
has an increment of approximately 15 to 20 mmHg as you change your
posture from lying down or sitting to standing up. This change in
pressure is noticeable when the heart is contracting so the systolic
number is the one to watch in this case.
Causes

The true cause of the problem is still known, however, there are
certain theories as why the problem occurs. One possible cause can be
as you stand up the blood accumulates more in the extremities of the
body and the amount of blood delivered by the heart decreases. This can
trigger a response in the nervous system to compensate by narrowing the
arteries which results in a blood pressure increase. In other cases the
condition might be related to a tumor or neuropathy.
Treating
the Orthostatic Hypertension
There is not an exact answer to treat every case of this type of
hypertension. Unlike other forms of hypertension, there isn't a single
method that you can use on the majority of the cases. Each doctor has
to look at the cases individually. Since there are so many different
causes, the doctor will have to figure out the root before a treatment
is decided. There are a few prescriptions that doctors will prescribe
in certain scenarios. They will also recommend getting up more
carefully from a seated position. High blood pressure can also be
prevented by frequently drinking water as well. This is one of the
simplest and yet most effective treatments available.
Overall, postural hypertension isn't one of the most life-threatening
conditions out there, but it can also be an indicator of something
bigger. Watch out for it and visit a doctor if you experience it often.
