The pineapple plant is very unique. The plant is the only member of
the bromeliad family that has edible fruit. The type of plant is
composed of several flowers whose fruitlets combine to form the final
fruit. The pineapple can produce more than 200 flowers before the fruit
is finally ready so it takes a while before it can be taken.
The color of the flowers can vary from lavender to red. A pineapple can
take a little more than 2 years in order to produce fruit. If you are
willing to grow the plant you have to cut the crown, the top area with
the leaves and put it in soil.
The color of a ripe pineapple is light yellow; if the pineapple plant
is not ready it will usually show more of a green color. You can also
determine if the fruit is ripe by the smell. When not ready it barely
has a smell; when ripe you can perceive a delicious and sweet smell.
The amount of scales it has can be used to know how sweet the fruit is
going to be, the more the better.
Keep in mind the fruit stops
ripening once is picked, so if it doesn’t seem ready leave it and
one that looks and smell the way it should.
The pineapple plant is not only delicious by its fruit but is also
healthy. One of the things that make it special is the
bromelain. Bromelain is basically a substance composed of protein
digesting enzymes. Besides helping in the digestion process this enzyme
has anti-inflammatory properties. It can also help with arthritis and
sinusitis conditions. Pineapples have a high content of manganese as
well. This mineral is important for the production of certain energy
creating enzymes. The fruit is also a great source of antioxidants like
vitamin C. The antioxidants can limit the amount of free radicals in
the body decreasing the chances of suffering conditions like cancer,
asthma, flu, atherosclerosis and heart disease.
People that suffer from high blood pressure and blood clots can benefit
greatly from pineapples too.
The high levels of antioxidants in this
tropical fruit can prevent the oxidation of the fat in the blood stream
causing the blood to flow smoother.
The enzymes in the pineapples can improve the elasticity and complexion
of your skin while making you look younger too. Eating pineapple
frequently can improve your health drastically so think about it next
time you are near a supermarket.
