Pineapple Plant

The pineapple plant is very unique. The plant is the only member of the bromeliad family that has edible fruit. The type of plant is composed of several flowers whose fruitlets combine to form the final fruit. The pineapple can produce more than 200 flowers before the fruit is finally ready so it takes a while before it can be taken.

The color of the flowers can vary from lavender to red. A pineapple can take a little more than 2 years in order to produce fruit. If you are willing to grow the plant you have to cut the crown, the top area with the leaves and put it in soil.

The color of a ripe pineapple is light yellow; if the pineapple plant is not ready it will usually show more of a green color. You can also determine if the fruit is ripe by the smell. When not ready it barely has a smell; when ripe you can perceive a delicious and sweet smell. The amount of scales it has can be used to know how sweet the fruit is going to be, the more the better.

Keep in mind the fruit stops ripening once is picked, so if it doesn’t seem ready leave it and choose one that looks and smell the way it should.
