Grapefruit Diet - What you need to know
The
grapefruit diet is often used as a natural way to lose weight. The
grapefruit is a bitter fruit originated in Barbados around the 18th
century. This fruit is a hybrid and is related to the orange.
Originally it was frequently used as an ornamental plant but after
sometime the fruit became a worthy agricultural product.
The fruit contains a wide variety of nutrients and is an excellent
source of vitamin C. It also has a strong antioxidant and has some
interesting antimicrobial properties. Grapefruit is naturally bitter
but is often cooked to take away the sourness making it sweet.
The 12 day grapefruit diet is often called a fad diet because many
people use
it at some point then everybody forgets about it until someone remembers
it again. This diet is quite simple; it involves consuming a lot of
grapefruit for a certain period of time. At this point you might be
thinking what makes grapefruit so special? Well, the fruit has certain
properties that make it quite unique. One of the most popular claims is
that the fruit has an enzyme that can burn fat easily. The
fruit
contains virtually no fat so eating a lot of it will not add any
meaningful calories.
You have to remember an important detail, this kind of diet is not be
used for a prolonged period of time.
The purpose of the diet is to
achieve a quick weight loss.
The weight loss in this kind of plan can be quite
dramatic, approximately like 40 to 50 pounds so if you want to lose
something like 5 to 10 pounds this diet is definitely not for you.
It
is also a short term plan, if you desire a long term weight loss and a
healthier life with lower cholesterol and blood pressure you should
stick to a more balanced diet.
The grapefruit diet goes with a light breakfast and ½ grapefruit or 8
oz of unsweetened juice. The lunch can
consist of lean cuts of meat with
a vegetable salad and and ½ of a grapefruit or drink 8 oz of
unsweetened juice. The dinner includes again the half of a grapefruit
or juice, a
fresh salad with any natural dressing and steamed fish. At the end of
the dinner a
cup of tea or coffee could be used as well.
Other things to keep in mind is that in the diet people are supposed to drink 8 glasses
of water daily and not eat anything between the meals. The
grapefruit diet
plan requires following the menu for 12 consecutive days then taking a
break for 2 days then repeating for the next 2 months.
Remember to talk
to your nutritionist before starting any kind of diet plan.
