What Are The
Fatty Liver
Symptoms
Fatty liver symptoms can be the result of suffering a condition known
as fatty liver disease. The illness affects most of the liver’s
metabolic functions. The liver is responsible for the detoxification of
the blood, the production of bile (a substance used in the digestion of
fats), the regulation of the metabolism, and the storage of nutrients like
iron among other functions.
The fact that a person might be gaining or
losing weight despite any diet could be related to the fatty liver
condition. There are other conditions that might affect the metabolism
like a thyroid malfunction. In order to be sure is recommendable to pay
attention for possible fatty liver symptoms.
The fatty
liver disease (FLD) can be divided into 2 types:
- the alcoholic
one and
- the non alcoholic one.
As you can imagine the alcoholic one is
caused by drinking an excessive amount of alcohol consistently. The other is often
present in people that are obese. Even when both can cause liver
inflammation, the alcoholic type is potentially more dangerous in the
long run.
Common Signs
The FLD condition is often asymptomatic but there are some signs that
could indicate problems with the liver. Some of them are: dizziness,
headaches, bad breath, depression, weight gain or loss (in later
stages), indigestion, gallstones, itchy eyes, confusion, obesity and
more. Other conditions like hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol
can appear as result of a damaged liver. The symptoms are often mild
and can be easily confused with many other diseases.
One of the symptoms that normally get the attention of people is the
pain in the abdominal area. This pain is quite different from any other
normal pain and is not consistent. Mentioning this pain to your doctor
can be very helpful for an effective diagnose of this condition. Early
detection can make the difference between a minor problem and a life
threatening condition.
What Can Be
Done
There are several tests that can be used to
determine if you are
experiencing fatty liver symptoms. Blood tests can be used check the
levels of certain enzymes in the liver. That can provide an indication
of the condition. Other tests frequently used are the CT scan and the magnetic
resonance imaging. The image of the liver can give some clues if the
organ is being damaged. The most effective way to know if someone is
suffering from fatty liver disease is a biopsy. An analysis of a small
sample of the liver’s tissue will reveal any abnormality affecting the
liver.
